ほど has multiple uses: 1) Indicates degree or extent (これほど 'to this extent'). 2) Shows approximate amount or time (三時間ほど 'about three hours'). 3) In the pattern ～ば～ほど, expresses proportional change ('the more X, the more Y'). 4) In negative sentences with ほど, indicates nothing is as extreme as what's mentioned.
