제1조(설치) 국방사ㆍ군사사 및 전쟁사의 조사ㆍ수집 및 편찬 등에 관한 사항을 관장하기 위하여 국방부장관소속하에 국방부군사편찬연구소를 둔다.

제2조(임무) 국방부군사편찬연구소(이하 "연구소"라 한다)는 다음 각호의 임무를 수행한다.

1. 국방사ㆍ군사사 및 전쟁사의 연구ㆍ편찬

2. 군사작전 사료의 조사ㆍ연구

3. 각종 군사관련 자료의 수집ㆍ보존 및 관리

제3조(소장)

①연구소에 소장 1명을 두되, 소장은 2급 이상 군무원으로 보한다. <개정 2017.9.5, 2018.7.17>

②소장은 국방부장관의 명을 받아 소관사무를 통할하고, 소속직원을 지휘ㆍ감독한다.

제4조(하부조직) 연구소에 필요한 부서를 두되, 그 조직 및 사무분장에 관한 사항은 국방부장관이 정한다.

제5조(정원) 연구소에 두는 군인 및 군무원의 정원은 국방부장관이 정한다.

부칙 <제16949호,2000.8.17> 이 영은 2000년 9월 1일부터 시행한다.

부칙(군인사법 시행령) <제28266호,2017.9.5> 제1조(시행일) 이 영은 공포한 날부터 시행한다. <단서 생략> 제2조 및 제3조 생략 제4조(다른 법령의 개정) ①부터 <24>까지 생략 <25> 국방부군사편찬연구소령 일부를 다음과 같이 개정한다. 제3조제1항 중 "장관급"을 "장성급(將星級)"으로 한다. <26>부터 <90>까지 생략
